EPA greenhouse gas projections show Ireland on track to miss 2030 climate target (epa.ie)
0xBASE INTEL BRIEF
- First two carbon budgets are projected to be exceeded by 24-34%.
- Sectoral ceilings for agriculture, electricity, industry and transport all likely exceeded.
- Ireland can meet original EU 30% target but not new 42% target with current measures.
"The Environmental Protection Agency's 2023 projections indicate Ireland will not achieve the 51% emissions reduction target by 2030 relative to 2018 under current measures. Carbon budgets for 2021-2030 are projected to be exceeded by 24–34%. Sectoral emissions ceilings for agriculture, electricity, industry, and transport are all likely to be exceeded. The original EU target of a 30% reduction can be met using flexibilities, but the new 42% target requires full and rapid implementation of additional measures."
